Objectifs et compétences

Objectifs :
The objective is to develop a critical mind in the face of the diversity of current techniques and protocols used in behavioural studies and to encourage a creative mind. Students will receive solid training on how to study behaviors from conceptual to practical levels and will develop their knowledge of animal models of behavioural processes, particularly models with genetic modifications and pharmacology. Students will be informed about comprehensive behavioral techniques applied in Neuroscience field covering from basic spontaneous behaviors or neurological reflexes to motor, sensory, emotional, as well as higher-level functions such as attention, executive function and learning and memory. They will learn to assess finely alterations of these behaviors in rodents with genetic manipulations. Three different behavioral devices (radial maze, water-maze and Barnes maze) frequently used in the molecular and behavioral neurosciences will be extensively developed to illustrate the objective and sprit of this teaching unit. Students will actively participate in the analysis of documents and scientific articles as well as the statistical analysis of real experimental data. A teaching-by-practice will be carried out in laboratory. This teaching unit is an excellent complementary training to the M1 units Emotion and Cognition: from theory to animal models, Plasticity of the nervous system, Pharmacology and Neuropharmacology. It is a valuable extension of the unit Cognitive Neurosciences for M2 students who want to specialize in behavioural approaches but is accessible to all neuroscience students who are interested to acquire a solid education in this field of the neurosciences.
